Summer School “Liberal Democracy under Pressure”

We would hereby like to invite you to apply for the upcoming IFLRY Summer School: “Liberal Democracy under Pressure”. The Summer School will take place in Moshchun, Kyiv Region from 28 August to 1 September 2019.

The Summer School is a follow-up to our yearly training on the basics of “Political Ideology and Theory” to further improve the knowledge of political youth activists on liberal ideology and liberal values and put these ideas into practical scenarios for Belarus and Ukraine. This event will focus on subjects that can be only touched briefly during the introductory trainings, such as (1) the values of an Open Society and Liberal Democracy as its base, (2) how these values are endangered by phenomena’s like modern populism, extreme nationalism as well as right or left wing extremism, (3) the problems internet propaganda and hate-speech in social media cause for the political discourse, (4) practical issues such as the role of the aforementioned topics in campaigning and political programs. The general aim of the event is to give young Belarusian and Ukrainian activists a detailed insight on liberal values and ideas in a modern democratic society and compare them to the actual situation in Belarus and Ukraine. As a specific outcome we would like to develop concise suggestions for policies that introduce and / or strengthen the Open Society and Liberal Democracy together with the participants.

To achieve this the event will focus on contextual learning and best-practice transfer but also on the active input of the participants. International trainers will introduce to the topics by using practical examples from the European Union or their home countries and help the participants to analyze the situation in their own countries to find suitable solutions and policies towards a more liberal state.

The learning sessions will be organized in an interactive style, where short lectures and trainings will be accompanied by extended work-group sessions, brain-storming’s and discussions. As of this our Summer School differs from the usual academical event as it focuses more on the stimulation of critical thinking a political discourse than on extensive lectures and pure consumption of information. Of course, as it is normal for a real Summer School, the topic-related sessions will be accompanied by team-building and sport activities.

The event is not only open to former participants of our introductory trainings or political activists. If you have a strong interest in forming a liberal society and economy in Belarus or Ukraine you are more than welcome to apply for this event, no matter if you are an independent individual or active in a political organization or an NGO.
